What is the difference between my hand writing and a machine?
Although most of our writing today is digitally typed, we still use hand writing for signatures, personal letters and notes.
I used my own hand as a test set and let the machine use it to write personal notes.
This work raises questions about the boundaries of personal and fabricated:
Is it still my hand writing if I didn’t write it manually?
Is a note personal if the machine can write it over and over again exactly the same?
If it looks identical, what is the extra value of hand writing?
A joystick controller for real-time interaction and reproduction with a ceramic 3D printer
CeramiStick
CeramiStick is a joystick interface for interacting in real-time with a ceramic 3D printer. The direct interaction skips both the modeling and slicing steps, cutting the ’middleman’ between the machine and the craftsperson, allowing the interaction to embody the craftsperson’s intentions for the machine and material.
Recording the craftsperson’s actions, enables the reproduction of the process, capturing unique hand gestures and material behaviors. This work explores the creative opportunities that arise from direct control of a ceramic printer through manual gestures.
